The Florida State University School Library Media Center serves as a keystone for the curriculum needs of the school community while also promoting and providing for students' recreational reading. The Library Media Center assists students in becoming life-long information seekers and ensures that they develop the skills to utilize information effectively through collaborative instruction and flexible access.

Library Stats

Library Policies

Kindergarten: 1 book at a time (2 books at a time in the spring semester)
Grade 1: 4 books at a time
Grades 2- 5: 5 books at a time
Grades 6-12: 6 books at a time

Students may check out books for a two week loan period. Any books or magazines can be renewed, except for SSYRA and FTR books. Overdue notices are automatically generated and emailed to parents every Friday at 4:00 p.m. The FSUS Library does not charge overdue fines; however, students are expected to pay to replace library books that are lost or damaged beyond repair.

Book Towers

What is a Book Tower?

A Book Tower is a list of books that a student has read. The paper book tower has an outline of a stack of books; as the student reads books and fills in the title and author for each book they've read, they create a tower of books on their paper.

How does it work?

Read books!
Write the title and author of the books on the Book Tower sheet.
Show your completed Book Tower to Ms. Underhill or Mrs. Cowhey in the library to get your brag tag.

What are the rewards for doing Book Towers?

Become a stronger reader! (Reading 20 minutes a day builds your fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary!)
Brag Tag for every completed Book Tower!

For Kindergarteners:

Kindergarteners will begin Book Towers in January. Teachers will complete one Book Tower with their students; students will attend Beach Day in May for completing this Book Tower.
Students who complete 2 Book Towers by May 1 (one with the class, one on their own) will attend an ice cream and popsicle party in May.

For 1st - 5th Graders:

Students who finish 2 Book Towers by May 1 will attend Beach Day at the end of the year.
Students who finish 4 Book Towers by December 1 will attend Breakfast with the Principal before Winter Break.
Students who finish 6 Book Towers by May 1 will attend an ice cream and popsicle party in May.

Sunshine State Books

Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program & Florida Teens Read Program

The Sunshine State Young Reader's Award (SSYRA) Program and the Florida Teens Read (FTR) Program are statewide reading motivation programs for students in grades K-12. The programs, sponsored by the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME), began in 1983. The purpose of these programs is to encourage students to read independently for personal satisfaction, based on interest rather than reading level. The SSYRA Program provides 3 separate book lists for students in grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. The FTR Program provides a book list for students in grades 9-12. Students from all over Florida vote for their favorite book in the spring; the author of the book with the most votes wins a prize from the FAME Association.

The SSYRA Junior book list, for grades K-2, is comprised of 10 picture books and 5 beginning chapter books. The SSYRA lists for grades 3-5 and 6-8, and the FTR list, are comprised of 15 fiction chapter books each. Students who read at least 3 of the 15 books on the list for their grade level are eligible to vote for their favorite book in the spring. At FSUS, our students vote on actual voting machines from the Leon County Supervisor of Elections! After we vote, we celebrate with a voting party. Additionally, students earn a reward for each book that they read:

K-2 students earn a book sticker for their SSYRA Jr bookmark;
3-5 students earn a book charm and a keychain; and
6-12 students earn a book brag tag and a keychain.

When students in grades 3-12 finish reading a SSYRA or FTR book, they will tell Ms. Underhill (school librarian) or Mrs. Cowhey (library assistant) a summary of the book to earn their reward and credit for reading the book. Hours

7:30 am - 3:15 pm

Elementary student visits: All elementary students will visit the library with their class once a week.

Secondary student visits: Secondary students may visit the library before and after school as long as capacity has not been reached.
